A total of 20 GarimaGrehs are operational across 16 States/UTs and three more GarimaGrehs have been sanctioned during the current financial year 2025-2026 [Puducherry (1) and Uttar Pradesh (2)].
Each GarimaGreh has a capacity of 25 beds. Year-wise occupancy and year-wise number of beneficiaries over the last five years, shelter-wise is at Annexure-I.
GarimaGrehs are a component of the Support for Marginalized Individual for Livelihood and Enterprise (SMILE) (Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Welfare of Transgender Persons) Scheme, which is a Central Sector Scheme; therefore, funds are not allocated State-wise, but are released directly to the implementing organizations.
The details of funds released and utilised for each shelter, including expenditure on food, healthcare, counselling and skill-development programs, State-wise and year-wise are at Annexure-II.
Each GarimaGreh has 11 sanctioned staff positions, and presently, in each GarimaGreh, 11 staff are working.
A total of 31 proposals from 10 States/UTs were received and forwarded to the respective State Governments/ UT Administrations for their recommendations about setting up new GarimaGrehs.
Based on the recommendations received, 06 new GarimaGrehs have been sanctioned during financial year 2025-26 in the following States/UTs:
Jharkhand (1), Manipur (1), Madhya Pradesh (1), Puducherry (1) and Uttar Pradesh (2).
The total number of beneficiaries rehabilitated, placed in employment or enrolled in skill programs are 2885, details of which year-wise and State-wise, are at Annexure-III.
No complaints regarding safety, harassment, or inadequate facilities have been reported during the stay of transgender persons in GarimaGrehs.
ANNEXURE-I
Year-wise occupancy and year-wise number of beneficiaries over last five years, shelter-wise in GarimaGrehs is as under:

ANNEXURE-III
Details of beneficiaries rehabilitated, placed in employment or enrolled in skill programs are as under:
A total of 1812 transgender persons residing in GarimaGrehs have been imparted skill training, out of which several have been placed in various institutions such as the Bastar Fighter unit, Constables positions and Home guards in Chhattisgarh Police, Jupiter Hospital, Concentrix Call Centre, Tata Steel Jamshedpur, A-one Hair and Beauty Salon, Jindal Group of Hotel Management, among others.
Three Job Melas were organized with the support of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) from 2022-23, through which 223 transgender persons were placed in different institutions.
During 2024-25, a total of 725 transgender persons from Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi were provided skill development training through the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (Lucknow).
During 2025-26, 125 transgender persons from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have been provided with a 15 days Entrepreneurship Development Programme by National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD).
