India, Nov. 4 -- The Government of India has issued a release:

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged statements made by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President and Ludhiana Member of Parliament, Mr. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, against the late Sardar Buta Singh (former Union Home Minister) during the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab. Based on media reports and audio-video clips viral on social media, the Commission has learnt that Mr. Warring made objectionable comments regarding the late Buta Singh's religious Sikh origin , belonging to the Balmiki community, and his complexion , which are being seen as caste and colour-based discrimination.

The Commission's Honorable Chairman, Mr. Kishore Makwana, stated , " These comments are against constitutional values , social harmony, and the self-respect of the Scheduled Caste community. This is extremely serious and condemnable."

Understanding the seriousness of the matter, the Commission has taken immediate suo motu cognizance and issued notices to the Deputy Commissioner and SSP of Tarn Taran , Punjab, seeking clarifications. The Commission has directed them to submit written clarifications within seven days.

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes will ensure appropriate action in light of the clarifications received , the available evidence, and the legal provisions in this matter. The Honorable Chairperson stated that the Commission has consistently taken a firm stand against any form of discrimination , insult, or stereotypical comments against the Scheduled Caste community. He also appealed to the public to maintain constitutional dignity and social harmony on social media and in public forums .
