The Library Section of the Ministry of Rural Development celebrated ' National Library Week ' from 14th to 20th November , 2025. During this period , various programmes were organised including book exhibitions by prominent publishers and sellers , book identification competition by the employees to promote the culture of reading books and knowledge sharing.
National Library Week was formally inaugurated by Mr. Shailesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Rural Development. In his address, he emphasized the importance of books and said that every person should set a goal of reading at least one book every month. He stated that libraries play a vital role in the overall development of any society, and that special attention should be paid to expanding libraries at the Panchayat and Municipal levels. He commended the successful library campaigns conducted by DAY-NRLM in various states, stating that these initiatives have had a positive impact on society. He appealed to all officers and employees to develop the habit of reading books regularly and promote book culture. Senior officials and authors from the Ministry also shared their views during the event.
To mark this special occasion, a book exhibition and writing dialogue program, themed " Books for All ," was held at the Kartavya Bhavan campus. The program's objective was to raise awareness about books and highlight the role of libraries in promoting knowledge and empowerment in society.
The week-long event saw active participation from Ministry officials , staff, and authors. Publishers were invited to showcase their latest publications. Sessions were also held with prominent authors discussing their recent books. Podcast sessions were also held with Ministry officials who are also authors .
The closing ceremony of National Library Week was held at Kartavya Bhavan on November 20 , 2025. Senior officials , authors, and other invited guests graced the occasion. All distinguished guests shared their views on the importance of books , their social impact, and their role in learning and personal development. They emphasized the need to ensure access to libraries and books in rural areas , so that the culture of reading can be further strengthened at the rural level.
Organizing National Library Week is one of the major activities of the Department's library , which aims to connect with the Ministry's officers , staff and library users and provide them with the necessary materials and opportunities for learning. National Library Week is celebrated every year from 14th to 20th November across the country. It was started in the year 1968 by the Indian Library Association ( ILA) to increase public awareness about libraries and their resources .
