There are 3688 centrally protected monuments/sites under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the country. ASI undertakes conservation of these Monuments and sites as per the National Conservation Policy. The periodical condition assessments and day to day maintenance of these monuments and sites are carried out on regular basis as per the requirement and availability of resources.

The details of funds allocated and utilized for conservation and preservation of these monuments during the last five years, State-wise are given at Annexure-I.

The ASI undertakes conservation and preservation of centrally protected monuments, including lesser-known monuments. Visitor amenities such as pathways, signage, drinking water, toilets, benches, cultural notice board and site museums are developed, wherever feasible. ASI promotes heritage awareness through digital initiatives, cultural programmes, exhibitions, outreach programmes and dissemination of information on the occasion of World Heritage Day, World Heritage Week, Museum Day and other such type of occasions/events. ASI also conducts Seminars and workshops for students and scholars to impart a deeper knowledge on our vast cultural heritage.

Further, Ministry of Tourism promotes tourism destination and products of the country, in a holistic manner, including cultural and heritage tourism and lesser-known destinations. The promotions are undertaken through several initiatives such as organizing tourism promotional events, held in association with tourism stakeholders, digital promotion through social media handles in collaboration with social media influencers and showcasing the tourism destinations and products through the Incredible India Digital portal. Additionally, several stakeholder engagements are regionally organized by the India Tourism offices, to promote and raise awareness about these destinations, under the Dekho Apna Desh initiative.

There are 3688 monuments/sites under the care and maintenance of ASI, including lesser-known monuments. These sites are regularly inspected by the technical staff of ASI and the conservation, maintenance and development works are planned and executed based on the condition, priority and requirement of the monuments subject to the availability of resources.

The funds allocated and utilised in last five years are given at Annexure-I.
