This year's " Swachh Magh Mela 2026," held on the banks of the Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has become a new example of improved sanitation and excellent management. The Mela Authority, in collaboration with various government departments, developed a robust mechanism to realize the vision of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs ( MoHUA) 's Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) 2.0 . The highlight of the event was the " Swachh Aadat se Swachh Bharat " campaign , which is transforming devotees not just into tourists but also into stakeholders in cleanliness.
This 44- day long gathering on the sacred land of Sangam is now nearing its end. This year , a clean and healthy environment was created for 15 crore devotees and 10 lakh Kalpvasis at the fair. Spread over a vast area of about 800 hectares and 7 sectors at the confluence of Triveni, it proved how scientific waste management and proper planning of resources can transform a big event into a ' zero waste ' model. Despite the crowd of crores in the vast coastal area, the fair premises were made open defecation free ( ODF) and the goals of ' zero liquid discharge ' were also achieved.

मेले की स्वच्छता सुचारू बनाने के लिए मेला प्राधिकरण के साथ प्रयागराज नगर निगम बेहद महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहा है। सीमावर्ती शहरी हिस्सों की निरंतर सफाई सहित मेले के ठोस अपशिष्ट को शहर के प्रोसेसिंग प्लांट तक नियमित रूप से पहुंचाया जा रहा है। पूरे मेला क्षेत्र में 8000 कूड़ेदान रखे गए और कचरा संग्रहण के लिए 25 हॉपर टिपर व 12 कॉम्पैक्टर लगातार तैनात रहे। कचरे को सही तरीके से व्यवस्थित करने के लिए 10 लाख लाइनर बैग्स उपयोग किए गए, ताकि संक्रमण का खतरा न रहे। आयोजन को स्वच्छ एवं सफल बनाने में सबसे अहम भूमिका निभाने वाले 3300 सफाईमित्रों ने तीन पालियों में 24 घंटे निरंतर काम किया। प्रशासन ने इन सफाईमित्रों के लिए न केवल 'सैनिटेशन कॉलोनी' और उनके बच्चों के लिए आंगनवाड़ी केंद्र संचालित किए, बल्कि 'स्वच्छ कुम्भ कोष' के माध्यम से उन्हें स्वास्थ्य सुरक्षा प्रदान की और वेतन का सीधा हस्तांतरण सुनिश्चित किया।
स्वच्छता के इस मॉडल ने स्थानीय अर्थव्यवस्था और श्रद्धालुओं की आदतों पर सकारात्मक प्रभाव डाला है। 'वोकल फॉर लोकल' को बढ़ावा देते हुए स्थानीय महिला स्वयं सहायता समूहों (SHGs) को कपड़े के थैले और प्राकृतिक विकल्पों के वितरण से जोड़ा गया, जिससे मेले में सिंगल-यूज़ प्लास्टिक के उपयोग में कमी दर्ज की गई है। इस प्रबंधन के माध्यम से करीब 5,000 स्थानीय लोगों को प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष रोजगार प्राप्त हुआ। बेहतर स्वच्छता व्यवस्था के चलते विदेशी पर्यटकों का आगमन पिछले वर्षों की तुलना में अधिक हुआ।
This year, for the first time, the entire fair area was declared a ' Zero Animal Zone ' , which eliminated the problem of animal waste on the roads and ghats. To make the fair ' single-use plastic free ' , the use of ' kulhad ' and ' dona-pattal ' was made mandatory this time , which proved to be environmentally friendly. ' On-site composting ' was also an effective step in waste management , where wet waste from langars and camps is being converted into manure through mobile composting units within the fair itself.
The fair also pioneered technology and water sanitation , providing 10 water ATMs , 23 tube wells, and 33,223 camp connections for pure drinking water . Over 400 AI -based CCTV cameras were used to monitor the cleanliness of the entire complex , immediately alerting the response team if they spotted garbage or dirt. As the fair nears its conclusion, it has sent the message that with a combination of willpower and modern technology , even such a large-scale event can be completely eco-friendly and clean.
