India, March 6 -- The Government of India has issued a release:

The government has initiated efforts to ensure India 's fertilizer supply ahead of the Kharif season due to political instability in      West Asia . The Department of Fertilizers has assured farmers that India currently has adequate fertilizer reserves , despite disruptions to maritime transport , particularly cargo movement .

The Department of Fertilizers has further clarified the situation through data to remove any confusion among farmers . The Government of India has created a large buffer stock of fertilizers through an aggressive strategy of advance storage during the low consumption phase . As a result , India 's fertilizer reserves have reached 17.7 million metric tons ahead of the Kharif season .

Reiterating its commitment to farmers , the Department of Fertilizers reported a significant increase of 36.5 % in total fertilizer stocks compared to last year . These stocks have increased from 129.85 lakh metric tons on March 6 , 2025 , to 177.31 lakh metric tons today . This is driven by unprecedented increases in critical soil nutrients , especially DAP ( 25.13 lakh metric tons ) and NPK stocks ( 55.87 lakh metric tons ) .

Additionally , the availability of urea , the country 's most consumed fertilizer , has also increased to 5.93 million metric tons . This robust data - based stockpile clearly indicates that India will be able to withstand global supply chain shocks for the upcoming Kharif sowing season . This ensures that international disruptions do not lead to shortages for farmers domestically .

Unprecedented import strategy

To ensure a steady supply of all subsidized fertilizers , the Department of Fertilizers has already arranged the necessary shipments . The Government of India has imported 9.8 million metric tons of fertilizers through February 2026 , and more than 1.7 million metric tons of additional imports are in the pipeline for the next three months . This is a testament to the government 's proactive approach in protecting the interests of the farming community amid global turmoil .

Further , to avoid the volatility of fertilizer prices and supplies in different countries , Indian companies have secured long - term supply agreements for P& K fertilizers with major international producers .

Strategic Readiness : High- Level Intervention

Amid pressure on LNG supplies , the government is actively pursuing optimal resource utilization . At a high - level review meeting held at the Department , the government assured that gas supply to the fertilizer sector will remain a national priority . The Department clarified that farmers are the government 's top priority and their interests will not be compromised under any circumstances . Farmers are encouraged to continue their preparations for Kharif crops without panic .

Explaining its strategy for fertilizer production and availability , the department stated that the current period is a lean period , when companies shut down their plants for maintenance and repairs . Fertilizer companies have decided to advance their scheduled maintenance to take advantage of the global situation .

Several global sources are also being contacted for fertilizer imports . The Department of Fertilizers , in coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas , is monitoring the situation in real time to ensure prompt clearance of imported fertilizer shipments . The Department of Fertilizers is also preparing to take immediate, effective action in response to the changing nature of the global energy market .
