Ministry of Culture operates Museum Grant Scheme under which financial assistance is provided for setting up of New Museums/development of the existing museums/digitization of museum collections/setting up of virtual museums and training of museums professionals of museums managed by Central/State Governments, Societies, Autonomous bodies, Public sector Undertaking, local bodies, Academic Institutions and Trusts registered under the societies Act at the regional, State and District Level in the country.
Eligibility Criteria: For the purpose of support under this component, museums have been classified into three categories as per the existing guidelines of the Museum Grant Scheme:
Category I: Existing renowned Museums of the Central or State Governments located in the state capitals, subject to the following:
Category II: Central or State Govt. owned museums including museums of PSU
Category III: Projects of Societies, Autonomous bodies, local bodies, Public Sector Undertaking, Academic Institutions and Trusts registered as a society under the Indian Societies Act of 1860 (XXI) or a similar legislation of the state governments, or as a Public Trust under any law at the time being in force subject to the following:
Ministry of Culture, Government of India may take up any project under Category I &II as project of National importance at its discretion for the purpose of development of Museum & Cultural Spaces.

The details of proposals received during the last five years are at Annexure-I. The proposal approved, and grants released under the Museum Grant Scheme for setting up of new museum and development of existing museums during the last five years are at Annexure- II.
Under the Museum Grant Scheme financial assistance is being provided to:
Ministry of Culture provides financial assistance to the project proposals received for digitalisation of museum collections as per guidelines of the Museum Grant Scheme.
Further, The Ministry of Tourism promotes India as a holistic destination in the tourism generating markets to promote various Indian tourism products and tourism destinations of the country, including Museums, to increase India's share of the global tourism market. The promotion is carried out through organizing and participating in travel events and exhibitions; providing assistance to State Governments for organizing fairs and festivals; inviting influencers, tour operators, journalists and opinion makers to visit the country under the Hospitality Programme of the Ministry; various outreach activities through website and social media; promotions in association with the State Governments and the overseas Indian Missions etc.
