Abstract: ABSTRACT ZIRCONIA TOUGHENED ALUMINA AND PROCESS OF PREPARATION THEREOF The present invention discloses a process for producing high- toughness Zirconia Toughened Alumina (ZTA) for high-impact applications. Boehmite and 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (3-YPSZ) are wet-milled, calcined and milled again to form a submicron composite powder of a-Al2O3 and tetragonal zirconia. The powder is mixed with binders, dispersants, and defoaming agents to create a stable slurry, atomized into free-flowing granules via spray drying, and tape-casting. This cost-effective method eliminates hot pressing, reduces raw material costs via boehmite, and enables scalable production. The resulting ZTA offers superior mechanical performance without additives, outperforming traditional ceramics for applications like armor, cutting tools, and biomedical implants, combining toughness, simplicity, and versatility.
