MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641094290 A) filed by Srm Dental College on August 04, 2026, for Zinc Oxide Nanoparticle-Coated Surgical Suture Functionalized With Andrographolide And Glycyrrhizin For Prevention Of Surgical Site Infections In Oral Lessions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a surgical suture coated with zinc oxide nanoparticles co-functionalized with andrographolide, derived from Andrographis paniculata, and glycyrrhizin, derived from Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice), and to a method for the preparation thereof. The functionalized nanoparticle coating imparts antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties to the suture without compromising its tensile strength or knot security. The invention finds particular application in the closure of surgical wounds in the oral cavity, including periodontal, mucogingival, and extraction-related surgical sites, for the prevention of surgical site infection through sustained local release of the active phytochemical—nanoparticle complex at the wound margin.
