Abstract: A lubricant oil condition monitoring system (LOCMS) is disclosed for both wet sump and dry sump configurations in automotive vehicles. The system integrates a pH sensor (3) and an optical sensor (4) mounted within an inline sampling chamber (9) positioned along the oil circulation circuit. The pH sensor (3) measures the hydrogen ion activity of the lubricant to compute the Total Acid Number (TAN) and Total Base Number (TBN), serving as an indicator of the oil's neutralization number and degradation level due to oxidation and contamination. The optical sensor (4), comprising an infrared LED emitter and a photodetector pair, measures the opacity and turbidity of the lubricant oil to identify the presence of foreign substances, soot, metal particles, water ingress, and fuel dilution. A microcontroller / ECU (5) processes the sensor signals, applies temperature compensation, compares values against pre- programmed thresholds, and triggers a dashboard display/alert unit (6) when oil quality falls below acceptable limits. A data logger (7) records oil condition history for predictive maintenance scheduling. The system operates continuously during engine running and provides real-time oil health monitoring, thereby extending oil service life, preventing premature engine wear, reducing unnecessary oil change intervals, and ensuring optimum lubrication quality in automotive vehicles.
