Inventors include Mrs. S. Monika; Ms. R. Divya; Mr. Prem Srinivas; and Mr. K. Sandeep.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated weed detection system and method for agricultural applications using digital image processing techniques. The system acquires a reference image representing a healthy crop and a test image from an agricultural field. The images are preprocessed through grayscale conversion, resizing, and numerical precision enhancement to ensure uniformity and accuracy. A similarity measure between the reference and test images is computed using normalized cross-correlation, generating a correlation map from which a representative correlation value is extracted. The system then applies a threshold-based classification mechanism to determine the presence or absence of weeds, wherein lower correlation values indicate weed infestation. The proposed approach eliminates the need for machine learning models and large training datasets, thereby reducing computational complexity and implementation cost. The system further provides visual outputs, including the correlation map and classification results, for easy interpretation. The invention enables efficient, real-time weed detection and supports precision agriculture by reducing manual effort, optimizing resource utilization, and minimizing excessive use of herbicides.
