Abstract: ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a wearable thumb exoskeleton system designed for continuous biomechanical monitoring and predictive analysis of thumb strain incurred in real time use of devices. Overuse of smartphones has been shown to cause a greater number of musculoskeletal issues in thumbs; yet, currently available solutions are either subjective, limited to temporary use or only applicable after an injury occurs. To solve this problem, the present invention comprises a combination of a wearable glove equipped with flex sensors located in the Interphalangeal (IP) Joint and Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) Joint, a Force Sensitive Resistor (FSR) in the distal phalanx and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) installed in the Carpometacarpal (CMC) Joint, thus capturing all the movement parameters in detail. The obtained data is then processed by an on-board processing unit and transmitted wirelessly to both a mobile and cloud-based platforms. The method uses a predictive analytics architecture designed to compute the sum of biomechanical stress via real-time data collection, feature engineering and temporal analytics. The computation of stress index depends on variables like frequency of movement, bend angles, forces acting and usage times that help classify the severity of risks. Additionally, the invention allows personalizing advice and warnings to promote timely intervention, thus moving from treating symptoms to preventive care. Unlike the existing prior art, the invention distinguishes itself by incorporating real-time sensing, cumulation of stresses and dynamic recommendations within a single wearable gadget. In addition, the device integrates a mobile app, a cloud-based database system and a smart decision-making process that considers risk evaluation. Consequently, the novel invention enables an integrated, expandable and user-oriented solution for constant monitoring of the thumb joint, identification of overuse injuries and preemptive management of musculoskeletal diseases.
