MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631105013 A) filed by Institute Of Engineering And Management - School Of University Of Engineering And Management on September 01, 2026, for Wearable Inertial Sensor-Based Air Percussion Instrument With Wireless Midi Output.
Inventors include Souhridya Bhattacharjee; Dr. Satyajit Chakrabarti; and Sounak Samanta.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: A wearable electronic percussion instrument comprises a hand-worn housing (1), an inertial measurement unit (10), a microcontroller (20), a wireless transmission module (30), a display (40), and a power supply (50). Upon power-on, the microcontroller (20) establishes baseline rest acceleration magnitude and baseline rest orientation from successive stationary samples. Strike onset is detected from acceleration-magnitude deviation, followed by fixed-duration peak capture and a cooldown state requiring a refractory duration and a release threshold lower than the onset threshold. The microcontroller (20) classifies a stroke from the dominant axis and sign of continuously filtered orientation deviation, derives note velocity from captured peak deviation, and wirelessly transmits MIDI note messages. A complementary second wearable unit derives continuously updated pitch-bend from sustained post-strike orientation deviation to emulate pitch-glide without a pressure sensor, while the display (40) indicates connection, stroke and rhythmic-cycle information.
