MUMBAI, India, Oct. 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531117254 A) filed by Visva- Bharati on November 26, 2025, for Water Hyacinth Fibre And Regenerated Cellulosic Fibre Blended Rotor Spun Yarn”.

Inventors include Dr. Sankar Roy Maulik; Ms. Soumili Pal; and Mr. Abir Chakrabarti.

The application for the patent was published on October 02, 2026, under issue no. 40/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the development of a biodegradable rotor-spun yarn produced from a blend of water hyacinth fibre and regenerated cellulosic fibre. The invention describes a systematic process for the extraction of fibre from water hyacinth stems, chemical conditioning with fatty acid esters, nonionic emulsifiers, and antistatic agents, and enzymatic treatment with pectate lyase to improve fibre fineness, strength, and spinnability. The treated fibres are mechanically cut to a staple length compatible with regenerated cellulosic Excel fibre and blended in a 30:70 ratio. The blend is processed through conventional textile operations, including lap formation, carding, two-stage drawing, and rotor spinning to produce yarn of count 8 Ne. The resulting yarn exhibits adequate tensile properties, including suitable tenacity and elongation, enabling its use in knitting and weaving applications. This invention represents the first scalable utilisation of water hyacinth fibre to produce textile-grade yarn, offering an eco-friendly and economically viable solution for producing biodegradable fabrics and garments.
