Abstract: A computer-implemented method for wastewater treatment plant design optimization includes setting input parameters including a population size, an iteration number, and upper and lower bounds of wastewater treatment plant design variables. The method includes generating a population of candidate solutions representing wastewater treatment plant design parameters and evaluating a cost function for the candidate solutions. The cost function includes a civil cost associated with aeration tank volume, an aeration cost for oxygen supply, a sludge handling cost, and a penalty cost for violation of effluent quality standards. The method includes updating the candidate solutions using an Aquila Optimizer algorithm, evaluating the cost function for updated candidate solutions, comparing cost values, and replacing candidate solutions with updated candidate solutions having lower cost values. The method outputs design parameters corresponding to a candidate solution having a lowest cost function value when the algorithm converges. (FIG. 1)
