MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641111388 A) filed by Dayananda Sagar College Of Engineering on September 17, 2026, for Vr-Based Interactive Avatar Framework For Bidirectional Translation Between Isl/Asl And Spoken Language.
Inventors include Prof. Preksha A Das; Dr. J Satheesh Kumar; Dr. Silpa Ajith Kumar; Kartik Mishra; Sriram K; and Tanmay Ranjan.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention provides a dual mode communication system in the field of Virtual Reality (VR) which enables inclusive communication of hearing individuals with a person with hearing impairment, particularly the Indian Sign Language (ISL) and American Sign Language (ASL). The system may be divided into two modes: Read Mode that enables sign language input and real-time audio output for the hearing user in a VR space; and Perceive Mode that enables spoken language input and sign language output in the form of a 3D sign language avatar for the Deaf user. The invention is to have two dedicated servers with a common large language model (LLM), which enables a more efficient bidirectional translation and reduces latency. The presently disclosed system differs from existing art solutions that are basically sign language to speech in that the disclosed system provides a full bidirectional communication system that allows for deaf users to see spoken speech with immersive avatar-based visualization. The invention brings together VR technology, real-time translation, and avatar sign representation to open up new possibilities for accessibility, inclusivity, and equitable communication for the deaf community who has been excluded from social interactions.
