MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641106994 A) filed by Mohan Babu University on September 05, 2026, for Vision-Based Hand Gesture Communication System.

Inventors include Ms. T. Ramya; Ms. D. Venkata Pavithra; Mr. N. Jagadeesh; Ms. V. Vaishnavi; and Mr. A. Ganesh.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a vision-based hand gesture communication system and method for enabling real-time assistive communication through automatic recognition of predefined hand gestures and conversion of the recognized gestures into corresponding text and speech outputs. The system comprises an image acquisition module, an image preprocessing module, a hand detection and landmark extraction module, a feature extraction module, a rule-based gesture recognition module, a text generation module, a text-to-speech conversion module, and an embedded processing unit configured to operate as an integrated communication framework. Initially, live video frames are captured through a camera and processed to detect hand landmarks representing finger joints and palm positions. The extracted landmark information is analyzed to determine predefined hand gestures using a rule-based classification mechanism. Upon successful gesture recognition, the identified gesture is mapped to a corresponding textual message, which is displayed through a visual interface and simultaneously converted into audible speech using a text-to-speech module. The entire process is executed on a Raspberry Pi-based embedded platform, providing contactless operation, low computational complexity, real-time performance, and portable implementation without requiring wearable devices or extensive training datasets. The present invention thereby provides an efficient, reliable, scalable, and cost-effective assistive communication solution suitable for hospitals, educational institutions, rehabilitation centers, public service environments, and other applications requiring real-time gesture-based communication.
