Abstract: The present invention relates to a vision-based desktop control system and method for enabling touchless interaction with a computing device using hand gestures. The system comprises an imaging device configured to acquire successive image frames containing a user's hand, a hand detection and landmark processing module configured to identify hand landmarks, a tracking module configured to determine movement of the landmarks, and a gesture recognition module configured to determine a hand gesture from spatial and/or temporal characteristics of the detected landmarks. A command mapping module associates the recognized gesture with a corresponding desktop control command for execution through a desktop control interface. The desktop control commands may include cursor movement, clicking, selection, scrolling, system volume adjustment, screen brightness adjustment and application navigation. The system may employ computer-vision, image-processing and/or machine-learning techniques and may operate using a conventional webcam without requiring specialized gesture-control hardware. The invention thereby provides a real-time, cost-effective and configurable touchless human-computer interaction mechanism for conventional desktop computing environments.
