Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is a visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution system comprising a reactor housing defining an irradiation chamber adapted to receive an aqueous reaction medium. A light-transmissive wall portion is coupled to the reactor housing and positioned to admit visible light into the irradiation chamber. A catalyst support is disposed within the irradiation chamber and defines a retention surface exposed to the aqueous reaction medium. A ternary photocatalyst layer is carried by the retention surface and comprises tungsten trioxide, molybdenum dioxide, and graphene oxide. The tungsten trioxide and molybdenum dioxide provide a semiconductor heterojunction region, and the graphene oxide provides an electron-transfer surface region. The ternary photocatalyst layer is positioned in an irradiated region of the irradiation chamber so that hydrogen is evolved from the aqueous reaction medium during visible-light exposure.
