Abstract: An electronic control system configured to control operation of a powertrain system including an internal combustion engine, the electronic control system comprising: a virtual engine-out NOx sensor implemented in the electronic control system, the virtual engine-out NOx sensor including a set of tables configured to output commanded engine-out NOx values in response to an input engine speed and an input engine torque, the set of tables being preconfigured with corrected commanded engine-out NOx values determined by correcting nominal commanded engine-out NOx values using a machine learning model; and at least one of a diagnostic system implemented in the electronic control system and configured to perform a diagnostic using the commanded engine-out NOx values, and a controller implemented in the electronic control system configured to control operation of one or more components of the powertrain system using the commanded engine-out NOx values.
