MUMBAI, India, Aug. 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621085630 A) filed by Harish U. Tiwari; Vitthal S. Kalbhor; and Pimpri Chinchwad College Of Engineering & Research on July 13, 2026, for Vehicle-Class-Based Segregated U-Turn System For Congestion Reduction On Divided Highways.

Inventors include Harish U. Tiwari; and Vitthal S. Kalbhor.

The application for the patent was published on August 28, 2026, under issue no. 35/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a Modified Median-Based Traffic Movement System for Congestion Reduction at Main Road Intersections, designed to improve vehicular circulation and reduce traffic congestion at urban intersections, traffic squares, and arterial road networks. The system comprises Divided Carriageways (10) for directional traffic movement, Landscaped Medians (20) functioning as physical separators and channelizing elements, Channelized U-Turn Paths for Light Motor Vehicles (LMV) (30) having comparatively smaller turning radii, Channelized U-Turn Paths for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV) (40) having comparatively larger turning radii, Traffic Islands (50) for vehicular guidance, and Segregated Traffic Flow Arrangements (60) configured to separate through traffic and turning traffic into dedicated movement paths. The invention regulates vehicular movement through controlled median-based turning corridors and dedicated circulation geometry, thereby minimizing traffic conflict points, reducing lane weaving, and improving traffic continuity and road safety. The coordinated arrangement of the system components enables smooth and efficient movement of different vehicle categories while reducing vehicle delay, queue formation, fuel consumption, and dependence on conventional intersection control methods. The invention is adaptable for implementation at signalized, partially signalized, or signal-free intersections including urban road junctions, commercial corridors, and smart transportation infrastructure.
