Abstract: The present invention relates to a chitosan-based hydrazide Schiff base derivative and a process for its preparation. More particularly, the invention relates to valorization of prawn shell-derived chitosan through sequential carboxymethylation, hydrazide functionalization, and subsequent condensation with 2-hydroxy-1- naphthaldehyde to obtain hydrazone-linked Schiff base structures containing multiple 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde moieties. The invention further relates to a novel process involving preparation of chitosan hydrazide from carboxymethylated chitosan followed by Schiff base formation using 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde. The synthesized derivative exhibits enhanced structural conjugation and modified physicochemical characteristics due to incorporation of aromatic hydroxynaphthalene groups within the chitosan framework. The invention additionally provides a sustainable approach for conversion of prawn shell waste into value-added functional Schiff base derivatives.
