MUMBAI, India, Sept. 28 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641112240 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology on September 18, 2026, for Uv-Responsive Tio2–nb2o5–baco3–srco3 Multifunctional Self-Cleaning Smart Glass Coating And Method For Preparation And Application.

Inventors include Dr. S. Sindhu; Dr. P. Elaiyaraja; Dr. S. Senthilnathan; and Dr. J. Vinola.

The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure pertains to a UV-responsive multifunctional self-cleaning smart glass coating composition and method for preparation and application thereof comprising a fluid glazing medium incorporated with titanium dioxide (TiO2), niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), barium carbonate (BaCO3) and strontium carbonate (SrCO3). In a preferred embodiment, the composition comprises 65 wt % fluid glazing medium, 15 wt % TiO2, 10 wt % Nb2O5, 5 wt % BaCO3 and 5 wt % SrCO3. The components are mixed and homogenized to form a substantially uniform coating formulation, which is applied to a transparent glass substrate and dried and/or cured in a suitable manner to produce a functional coating layer. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 in the presence of appropriate UV irradiation through the generation of photo-induced charge carriers and reactive species that facilitate the degradation or loosening of suitable organic pollutants. Then, with the aid of water or environmental moisture, the degraded or loosened contaminants are removed, providing a water-assisted self-cleaning function. The optical, physicochemical, interfacial and surface properties of the coating are further modified by the addition of Nb2O5, BaCO3 and SrCO3. The coating disclosed herein provides multifunctional optical and surface functionality and is applicable to architectural windows, building facades, vehicle glazing, greenhouse panels, solar-cover glass, public infrastructure and other transparent glass surfaces requiring reduced contamination and maintenance.
