Abstract: This invention delivers an eco-friendly method to produce high-performance, water-based rust-converting coatings using gallic acid recovered from grape agro- industrial waste. Gallic acid was isolated via filtration, centrifugation, acidification (pH 2–4), and ethyl acetate extraction, followed by vacuum crystallization. A furan- maleic anhydride Diels-Alder adduct was synthesized in an ionic liquid at 60°C and then reacted with the recovered gallic acid at 70–80°C to form an unsaturated modified adduct. To enable vinyl polymerization, the phenolic groups of the gallic acid were protected via tosylation using 2–10% p-toluene sulfonyl chloride. This protected adduct (1–4 wt%) was copolymerized with acrylic and vinyl monomers (20–30%) at 50–140°C to create a stable hybrid polymer dispersion. The resulting low-solvent, waterborne coating effectively cross-links with amines to convert rusted surfaces into stable complexes, providing robust metal protection while preserving petroleum resources.
