Abstract: Thermally Adaptive Clay Roof Tiles with Integrated Phase Change Materials for Passive Cooling This invention describes a thermally adaptive clay roof tile system integrating microencapsulated phase change materials (PCMs) for passive cooling and temperature regulation in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. The system comprises a structurally reinforced clay matrix with optimized porosity, enabling efficient heat dissipation, and an embedded PCM layer that undergoes a solid- to-liquid phase transition, absorbing and releasing thermal energy to maintain stable indoor temperatures. A hydrophobic and UV-resistant ceramic glaze enhances moisture resistance, durability, and thermal efficiency, while an optional high-reflectivity coating reduces solar heat gain. The system is designed to lower peak indoor temperatures by 5–7°C, reduce cooling energy consumption by up to 30%, and provide a long-term, low-maintenance solution for climate-adaptive architecture. Suitable for tropical and subtropical climates, the invention offers an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional roofing materials, improving energy efficiency and thermal comfort without requiring external power sources.
