MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411096066 A) filed by Lovely Professional University on December 05, 2024, for Therapeutic Method Using Carnosic Acid For Lead-Induced Kidney Damage Mitigation.

Inventors include Vivek Singh; and Mandeep Kaur.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a therapeutic method for mitigating lead-induced kidney damage using carnosic acid, specifically in the field of nephroprotection and oxidative stress management. The method involves administering carnosic acid in a dual-dose regimen of 25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg, once daily for 14 days, to subjects such as Swiss albino mice, which have been induced with nephrotoxicity via intraperitoneal administration of lead acetate. The therapeutic efficacy is assessed by measuring biochemical markers of kidney function, including blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine, alongside evaluating oxidative stress markers and apoptosis-related proteins in renal tissues. The carnosic acid activates the NRF2 pathway, resulting in the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), thereby elucidating its protective mechanisms. The method includes histopathological analysis of kidney tissues and dose-dependent comparison, revealing the effects of lead-induced nephrotoxicity and the protective role of carnosic acid.
