Abstract: The XYZ Language Learning Model: Xenial, Yonder, and Zest A Proposed Methodology for Creating an Engaging Second-Language Learning Classroom Abstract The proposed XYZ Language Learning Model, a classroom methodology for second-language learning built around three interconnected principles: Xenial, Yonder and Zest. The model begins with the premise that effective language learning is not produced by exposure to linguistic forms alone. Learners need to experience the classroom as a welcoming social space, encounter language beyond the immediate boundaries of the classroom, and develop an active willingness to participate in meaningful language use. Xenial therefore represents the creation of an inclusive and hospitable linguistic environment; Yonder represents movement beyond the immediate classroom through authentic, contextualised and socially situated language experiences; and Zest represents sustained energy, curiosity, experimentation and willingness to use the second language. The proposed methodology is designed as a flexible cycle rather than a rigid three-step lesson formula. A teacher may enter the cycle at different points depending on learners, tasks and context. Xenial establishes the conditions for participation, Yonder expands the contexts in which language is encountered and used, and Zest turns those experiences into active engagement and continued learning. The model places particular emphasis on learner voice, low-risk participation, peer interaction, authentic materials, multimodal learning, reflection and purposeful language production. It also proposes practical classroom procedures and indicators through which the model can be observed and evaluated. The XYZ Model is presented as a new conceptual synthesis rather than a claim that its individual words or underlying educational principles have never appeared in previous scholarship. The originality proposed here lies in their deliberate integration into a single second-language classroom methodology and in the relationships among the three dimensions. The model therefore requires empirical validation through classroom-based research. It is intended to provide teachers and researchers with a practical framework for designing learning environments in which learners belong, move beyond familiar linguistic boundaries, and develop the confidence and energy to use the language.
