Abstract: The relevant invention in the background is a random number generator, which uses the principles of quantum mechanisms, specifically for a quantum key distribution system. A key in this context is a session that is used for encoding messages. The proposed invention is a random number generator that uses the principles of quantum mechanisms. This is totally different from any standard pseudo-random number generator, which normally uses a fixed mathematical algorithm and a predictable seed. It is arguable that this seed could also be compromised in a number of conventional scenarios, so the present device makes use of a light-emitting diode as a photon source with polarization encoding according to a BB84 key distribution system. The measurement of a few photon events generates quantum randomness, and as a result, a random sequence that is created is not reproducible and remains random, even when there are enemies. The architecture also assures security through a system that is comprised mainly of quantum randomness at a hardware level and secure sharing of keys that can be developed using an application that produces completely random and unbiased cryptographic keys. This technology offers security for cryptographic applications because they utilize quantum instead of conventional computational sources. Therefore, it is not easy for a quantum computer that will be developed in the future to hack these applications. The invented technology also includes a module for signal processing that is used for receiving random numbers, correction of errors, and creating keys for sending messages securely.
