Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for implementing a compute service in a reduced footprint data center. A control plane of the compute service can execute a compute service instance at a bare metal computing device of the reduced footprint data center. The control plane can receive a first indication that the bare metal instance is successfully executing from an agent executing in the bare metal instance. The control plane can then send to the agent information identifying a hypervisor image accessible to the agent via a network connection of the reduced footprint data center and receive, a second indication that the hypervisor image has been successfully provisioned on a storage device of the bare metal computing device. The control plane can then initiate a reboot of the compute service instance.
