Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for implementing a block storage service in a reduced footprint data center. A first computing device of the reduced footprint data center can execute a block storage hypervisor and provision a virtual machine in the block storage hypervisor. The virtual machine can be associated with a local boot volume of the first computing device. The block storage service can be executed on the virtual machine. The block storage service can a service boot volume encryption key obtain from a data encryption key service executing in the reduced footprint data center. The block storage service can then decrypt, using the service boot volume encryption key, a service boot volume usable to initiate a boot sequence for a second computing device of the reduced footprint data center.
