Inventors include Dr. Lalitha Easwaran; and Dr A. Abbas Ali.
The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a tamarind shell–seed composite bio-adsorbent and a method for removing and recovering crude oil from contaminated water. The invention utilizes tamarind shell and tamarind seed biomass residues as adsorbent materials, wherein the shell and seed are separately cleaned, dried, ground and sieved and subsequently combined in a predetermined proportion to form a composite bio-adsorbent. The prepared composite is contacted with crude-oil-contaminated water for a predetermined period to facilitate adsorption of crude oil onto and within the composite structure. The adsorption process may be performed under selected operating conditions including adsorbent dosage, initial crude-oil concentration, contact time, particle size, pH and temperature. Following adsorption, the oil-loaded composite is separated from the treated water, and the retained crude oil may be recovered by mechanical pressing or compression. The recovered composite may optionally be conditioned or regenerated for subsequent reuse. The invention provides a biomass-based approach for converting tamarind-processing residues into a value-added adsorbent for crude-oil-contaminated water treatment and enables removal, recovery and potential reuse within the treatment process.
