Abstract: SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR SMART ENGINE BRAKE ASSIST ABSTRACT A system includes a controller of a vehicle. The controller is configured to receive information regarding the vehicle including a first gear of the vehicle, a current speed of the vehicle, a current braking demand of the vehicle, and a current speed of an engine of the vehicle; determine a braking capability of a plurality of components of the vehicle. The controller is configured to compare the current braking demand of the vehicle to a first braking capability threshold. The controller is configured to, responsive to determining that the current braking demand is less than or equal to the braking capability of the first component, compare the current speed of the engine of the vehicle to an engine speed threshold. The controller is configured to, responsive to determining that the speed of the engine is less than or equal to the engine speed threshold, activate the first component.
