Abstract: A system includes an igniter configured to ignite an air-fuel mixture according to a base spark timing, and a controller coupled with the igniter. The controller is configured to perform operations, including receiving, from one or more sensors, (a) data indicative of an engine load and (b) data indicative of a pressure within an intake manifold coupled with an engine including the engine cylinder. The operations include determining whether the engine load is a low load condition or an idle condition and detecting a presence of a vacuum within the intake manifold. The operations include operating the igniter to delay ignition of the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber relative to the base spark timing based on (a) determining that the engine load is the low load condition or the idle condition and (b) detecting the presence of the vacuum within the intake manifold.
