Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing a gradient-crystallinity polylactic acid (PLA) fibre. The method comprises combining high molecular weight PLA granules with histidine during a melt or polycondensation stage, wherein the histidine inhibits thermal degradation of the PLA molecular weight during subsequent processing. The stabilized granules are heated at 160°C to 200°C to form a homogeneous polymer melt, which is extruded through a spinneret to form one or more filaments with longitudinally aligned polymer chains. The filaments are discharged at an exit temperature of 180°C to 300°C and cooled at 20°C to 40°C, causing an outer surface region to cool faster than an inner region and thereby forming a continuous crystallinity gradient extending from a higher-crystallinity outer shell to a lower-crystallinity inner core. The filament is subsequently drawn and annealed to permanently fix the crystallinity gradient, geometry, and final fibre shape.
