Abstract: ABSTRACT SYSTEM FOR STABILIZATION OF ULTRA-THIN CORNEAL TISSUE USING SURFACE-LIMITED CROSS-LINKING, SHIELDING, AND SYNERGISTIC BIOCHEMICAL REMODELING A corneal tissue stabilization system for use with ultra-thin corneal tissue having a stromal thickness below 400 microns is disclosed. The system comprises a surface-limited energy delivery module configured to deliver controlled electromagnetic radiation to an anterior stromal region, a protective interface shielding module comprising one or more layers selected from a riboflavin-containing film, a biocompatible soft contact lens, a hydrogel layer, a polymeric membrane, a collagen-based layer, and a viscoelastic medium, and a biochemical remodeling module comprising a synergistic ophthalmic formulation including a photoactive agent, an antioxidant, an osmotic regulator, and a nutrient component. The protective interface shielding module provides functional thickness augmentation of at least 300 microns and attenuates transmission of the electromagnetic radiation toward posterior corneal structures. The three modules operate in coordinated functional relationship to confine effective cross-linking activity to the anterior stromal region while protecting deeper stromal layers, Descemet's membrane, and the corneal endothelium.
