Abstract: 102] The present invention relates to a system for infrastructure-independent bidirectional long-range communication, user identification and emergency management. The system comprises a portable or wearable communication device, distributed long-range wireless relay communication nodes and a centralized monitoring and control unit. The wearable device acquires location information, transmits messages and emergency alerts and receives downlink messages. The relay nodes provide direct or multi-hop packet forwarding and may obtain user-identification and received-signal-strength information while updating communication-path information. Structured packets contain source, path, destination and data information and may further contain message type, user identifier, location and signal-strength information. A locally hosted web interface enables a wireless computing device to exchange messages through the long-range network without Internet connectivity. Upon an emergency event, the centralized monitoring unit provides visual, audible and information-based alerts. The distributed architecture further supports alternative relay paths upon communication-link unavailability. Accompanied Drawing [FIGS. 1-11]
