MUMBAI, India, June 26 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641071599 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on June 09, 2026, for System For Electrochemical Detection Of Microplastics.

Inventors include E. Manikandan; S. Sandhiya; and M. Manikandan.

The application for the patent was published on June 19, 2026, under issue no. 25/2026.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a system (100) and a method (700) of electrochemical detection of microplastics. The system (100) includes an electrochemical sensing arrangement for detecting microplastic particles in fluid samples. An electrochemical cell (112) housing a working electrode (104), a reference electrode (106), and a counter electrode (108), enables controlled electrochemical interaction. The working electrode (104) includes a nanocomposite sensing layer that interacts with microplastic particles and generates a measurable current response. A signal generation and measurement interface (110) applies electrical excitation and acquires corresponding current signals from the electrochemical cell (112). The processor (102-2) analyzes the acquired signals to extract features associated with microplastic presence and concentration. The system (100) achieves rapid, sensitive, and portable detection of electrochemically inert microplastic particles through enhanced electrochemical signal generation, selective nanocomposite interaction, reliable concentration estimation, and real-time monitoring across diverse environmental sample conditions.
