Abstract: A system for detecting foreign object debris on a runway and method thereof, comprises one or more UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) 101 positioned over a runway surface to hover over the runway surface, at least one optical imaging sensor 203 to capture high-resolution images of the runway surface during flight, a mission triggering module 301 to receive a mission trigger signal corresponding to a runway related event and autonomously transition the UAV 101 from a standby state to an active inspection mode, a runway mapping module 302 to digitally divide the runway into a plurality of scanning zones prior to flight, a flight path planning module 303 to generate a flight path over the runway surface for ensuring complete runway surface coverage with overlapping image acquisition, optimized altitude, and speed for image clarity, and an adaptive flight module 304 to adjust UAV flight speed, flight altitude, and image acquisition parameters.
