Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and process for additive manufacturing of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The system comprises a fiber- conditioning module for establishing a controlled condition of natural fibers, a material preparation module for combining conditioned natural fibers with a polymeric matrix, an additive deposition unit, a sensing arrangement, and a controller. The sensing arrangement determines material-state parameters associated with the fibers, composite material, extrusion process and/or deposited material. The controller determines a material-state index representative of printability of the composite material, compares the material-state index with a processing envelope, and dynamically modifies one or more conditioning, compounding, extrusion or deposition parameters. A deposition head may provide controlled fiber orientation, while a deposition monitoring arrangement measures geometrical or thermal characteristics of deposited material and provides feedback for subsequent process regulation. The system may further determine impending nozzle obstruction and cumulative thermal exposure of the natural fibers. The invention thereby compensates for variability of natural-fiber feedstocks and facilitates manufacture of composite articles having improved fiber distribution, interfacial bonding, dimensional consistency and mechanical performance.
