MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411100046 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on December 17, 2024, for System And Method For Vehicle Localization Within A Tunnel.

Inventors include Bharath Bhat; Battagiri Mallikarjuna Reddy; Vishal Anand; Rashmi Upase; Vivek Agarwal; Siri Prakash; and Biswaraj Sahu.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a system (104) and a method (800) for vehicle localization within a tunnel, utilizing sensor data and tunnel-specific attributes. The system (100) is configured to determine lateral and longitudinal positions of the vehicle (101) in real-time, identify the lateral position by updating a light probability distribution and applying Bayesian filtering to establish ego lane of the vehicle. Further, a real-time landmark identifier (ID) is generated for lights based on normalized tunnel attributes, including distances, light intensity, and tunnel geometry. The longitudinal position is determined by matching the generated landmark ID with predetermined map data, enabling robust localization for navigation, thereby enabling the vehicle (101) to be localized within tunnels.
