MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411098828 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on December 13, 2024, for System And Method For Vegetation Detection On Road Borders For Autonomous Vehicle.

Abstract: A system (100) for vegetation detection on road borders for an autonomous vehicle in accordance with the present disclosure is provided. The system (100) comprises a plurality of sensors (102), an electronic control unit (ECU) (104), and a control unit (106). The sensors (102) sense readings corresponding to the road borders and barriers/obstacles for a first cycle. The ECU (104) comprises a processor for processing the sensor readings for vegetation detection. The control unit (106) controls vehicle movement based on the processed readings. The system (100) detects the vegetation up to 30 meters using height and y-position variance. Further, the vegetation is detected when reference points for a second cycle exceed lateral and height thresholds. The system (100) confirms vegetation based on point density over time to avoid false classifications. This approach enables accurate overgrown vegetation detection and prevents unnecessary vehicle steering, providing an efficient solution for autonomous driving. Fig. 3
