Abstract: A system (100) for orchestrating physical sample movement by human operators in a multi-department clinical diagnostic laboratory includes barcoded locations (102) corresponding to stations or departments, operator devices (104) with barcode scanners (108) configured to receive task assignments and transmit barcode scan data (126), an orchestration engine (106) coupled to the operator devices (104), and a per-laboratory configuration (116) mapping tests to processing departments. The orchestration engine (106) receives sample information upon sample (112) entry, computes an ordered department sequence based on a test panel (114) and the configuration (116), generates a task (110) for movement from a source location (118) to a destination department (120) with a service level agreement (122), assigned operator, expected location, and completion criterion (124), assigns the task (110) to an operator device (104), receives confirming barcode scan data (126), and closes the task (110) upon criterion satisfaction.
