Abstract: ABSTRACT SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REAL-TIME OCCUPANCY MONITORING AND PASSENGER GUIDANCE A system and method for real-time metro coach occupancy monitoring and passenger guidance using distributed IoT sensors. An occupancy monitoring unit (104) installed within each metro coach (102) comprises a passenger detection module (106), an environmental sensor array (108), an onboard processing unit (110) with a sensor fusion module (130) and occupancy classification engine (128a), and a wireless communication module (112). The onboard processing unit (110) calculates an occupancy ratio from a continuously updated passenger count and a stored coach capacity value, and classifies the ratio into discrete status categories: Low (0-40%), Medium (41-75%), and Full (76-100%). Classified occupancy status data is transmitted wirelessly at approximately five- second intervals to a central server (114), which aggregates real-time occupancy maps for all monitored coaches and serves the data to a passenger guidance mobile application (118). The mobile application presents a visual coach-layout representation with green, yellow, and red colour-coded status indicators for each coach, enabling passengers to make pre-boarding decisions that reduce coach overcrowding and improve transit efficiency.
