MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611088902 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology Ropar on July 21, 2026, for System And Method For Real-Time Harmonic Elimination In Power Converters Using Sliding Mode Control.

Inventors include Pratik Kalkal; and A. V. Ravi Teja.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a system and method for real-time computation of switching angles for Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation (SHE- PWM) in power electronic converters using Higher Order Sliding Mode Control. The method reformulates nonlinear harmonic equations as sliding manifolds and applies a Second-Order Twisting Sliding Mode Control (SOT-SMC) algorithm to compute switching angles dynamically without requiring precomputed lookup tables. The system adapts to variations in modulation index and frequency to eliminate selected harmonics while maintaining the desired fundamental voltage. The controller ensures microsecond-level computation and operates at low switching frequencies, minimizing losses. The system is scalable to multilevel inverter topologies and suitable for FPGA-based real-time implementation. This invention improves harmonic suppression and waveform quality in power converters used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and industrial applications.
