MUMBAI, India, June 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411090637 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on November 21, 2024, for System And Method For Protecting A Vehicle From A Thermal Event.

Inventors include Venkatesh Balaji; Shreyas Joshi; and Kiran Sathyan.

The application for the patent was published on June 12, 2026, under issue no. 24/2026.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a system (200) for protecting a vehicle from a thermal event. The system (200) includes an exhaust pipeline (202) integrated into a plurality of cell enclosures (206A-206D) associated with a battery module (204). Further, the system (200) includes at least one gas duct (208) configured to converge into the exhaust pipeline (202) and allow a gas carrying from the plurality of cell enclosures (206A-206D) to discharge during the thermal event. Further, the system (200) includes a constricted section (210) that creates a pressure drop based on an increase in gas velocity and a reduction in static pressure as the gas flows through the constricted section (210). Furthermore, the system (200) includes a switch (212) configured to sense the pressure drop at the constricted section (210) and disconnect an electric current path of the battery module (204) in response to the pressure drop.
