Abstract: Disclosed are a system (100) and method (500) for operating a chip-scale microwave photonic scanning receiver. The method (500) includes receiving, at Intensity Modulators (IMs) (102), radio frequency (RF) signals from antennas and carrier laser signals from a laser source (112). Further, the RF signals are modulated onto the carrier laser signals to generate corresponding upconverted optical signals, which are filtered to produce filtered optical signals. Furthermore, LO signals are generated from an amplified carrier laser signal, which are combined with respective filtered optical signals to generate combined signals. Thereafter, in-phase (I) and quadrature- phase (Q) electrical signals are extracted from the combined signals, and baseband representations of the RF signals are recovered and provided to an RF System-on- Chip (RF SoC) for subsequent signal processing, enabling compact, integrated, and high-performance microwave photonic reception and scanning.
