MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641107442 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai on September 07, 2026, for System And Method For Obstacle Avoidance In An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
Inventors include Markkandan S; Aditya Kumar; and Kislay Kumar.
The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.
Abstract: An obstacle avoidance system (100) for an unmanned aerial vehicle (150) includes one or more sensing units (102), a processing unit (104), and a flight controller (106). Sensing units (102) includes at least a first sensing channel (102A) to generate reference distance information, a second sensing channel (102B) to generate estimated distance information, and a third sensing channel (102C) to generate proximity sensing information. Processing unit (104), operatively coupled to sensing units (102), includes one or more processors (104A) and a memory (104B) storing executable instructions to receive sensing information, compute a divergence metric between reference and estimated distance information, adapt sensing and distance-estimation parameters to reduce divergence, determine a sensing confidence value based on a residual divergence, generate an obstacle representation through confidence-based sensor fusion, and generate flight control commands for flight controller (106) by dynamically modifying operational flight parameters to facilitate reliable obstacle avoidance and safe autonomous navigation.
