Abstract: The present invention relates to a portable system and computer-implemented method for non-contact detection, classification, and quantification of microplastic particles present in food and water samples. The invention comprises an enclosed controlled-illumination imaging chamber, an optical imaging module, an embedded processing platform, a computer vision engine, a machine-learning classification engine, a storage module, and a user interface integrated into a standalone battery- operated device. During operation, one or more images of a sample are acquired under controlled illumination and processed using a staged analytical pipeline including image preprocessing, adaptive particle segmentation, contour extraction, morphological feature extraction, dimensional estimation, artifact rejection, and embedded machine-learning classification of isolated particle image regions. The system distinguishes microplastic particles from non-plastic materials and imaging artifacts, generates quantitative analytical information including particle count, particle size distribution, morphology distribution, and estimated contamination metrics, and presents the results through an integrated user interface while optionally storing or exporting analytical reports. The invention eliminates the need for laboratory spectroscopy systems, chemical digestion, external computing infrastructure, or internet connectivity, thereby enabling rapid, portable, and low-cost screening of microplastic contamination in food and water samples. The invention is particularly suitable for household testing, educational institutions, environmental monitoring, food processing, public health surveillance, research laboratories, and decentralized contaminant screening applications.
