Method (1600) includes generating (1604) registration request message comprising variant identifier and procedure-selection field. Method (1600) includes transmitting (1606) the generated registration request message to an access and mobility management function (AMF). Method (1600) includes receiving (1608) registration accept message from AMF. Method (1600) includes activating (1612) NAS protocol variant corresponding to assigned variant identifier based on received registration accept message. Method (1600) includes configuring (1614) UE to operate using the NAS procedures indicated in the accepted procedure list associated with the selected NAS protocol variant.
