Abstract: [057] The present invention provides a system and method for multimodal environmental perception and assisted navigation for visually impaired individuals. The system comprises a wearable vision subsystem having an image acquisition device and an embedded processing unit, a walking-stick subsystem having differently oriented proximity sensors, a wireless communication subsystem, an environmental data fusion module, a decision-processing module and a multimodal feedback arrangement. Environmental images are processed for object identification and may additionally be processed for gesture recognition, predefined sign-language interpretation and optical character recognition. Proximity sensors detect obstacles within different spatial regions around a user. Information generated by the vision and walking-stick subsystems is wirelessly coordinated and combined to determine environmental conditions and corresponding assistive responses. Immediate hazards may generate tactile and/or audible warnings, while descriptive object or textual information may be communicated through speech. The distributed modular architecture thereby combines semantic environmental perception with immediate proximity sensing for assisted navigation. Accompanied Drawing [FIGS. 1-3]
